Frontiers: Painting in Scotland Now
On 2 August 2024 Frontiers: Painting in Scotland Now opens in the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. I will have four new paintings in the show, which runs throughout the Edinburgh festival until 8 September. Co-curated by Robbie Bushe RSA and Flora La Thangue, Frontiers: Painting in Scotland Now will explore the ways in which artists are pushing the boundaries of the medium of painting and reveal it to be a vital connection between the traditions of the past and ambitions for the future of the visual arts in Scotland. Frontiers will explore why, in a world saturated with digital imagery, painting continues to flourish. The exhibition will place Royal Scottish Academicians alongside other established practitioners and emerging artists, posing the question: what now for painting? Are there new frontiers for painting in Scotland. All works will be available for sale and the exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue. Magic Mirror, Hydra
From 18 June to 21 July I was delighted to have some paintings included in "Magic Mirror" on Hydra island, Greece. Curated by Wilhelmina von Blumenthal and Irina Karayannopoulou, it was "devoted to the artist's power to reflect, transform and distort reality".
"This exhibition is a tapestry of illusions, a web of experiences that escape the rational mind. Magic Mirror is a reflection on how we perceive the world; an invitation to explore what lies beyond our immediate senses".

Scottish Women Artists: 250 years of Challenging Perception, Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh
My 2005 painting "Lemons Dripping" is hanging in the Dovecot Studios and Gallery in Edinbugh as part of Fleming Collections's exhibition "Scottish Women Artists: 250 years of Challenging Perception" until January 6 2024.
"This important exhibition... celebrates the work of women artists who have challenged and shaped the contemporary art scene in Scotland. In an era when women lead Scotland's government, galleries and art schools, it is easy to forget the prejudices and barriers their predecessors have faced."
There is a book to accompany the exhibition by Charlotte Rostek. The book contains an image of my 1997 painting "Canute" which is also held by Flemings.

Hawthorn and the Feast of Julian, May 2023, New York
"Io" was part of Hawthorn and the Feast of Julian, an exhibition by Arusha Gallery in High Line Nine Gallery, New York from 16 to 28 May 2023.
"In this seasonal show we look to celebrate the mythologies of both the thorny Hawthorn bush and the writer, mystic and anchorite Julian of Norwich. Both invite rich visual narratives and contemplations ushering us into the summer months."

I'm delighted that the newly published 2nd edition of Gerda Stevenson's "Quines" bears an image of my painting "Lover's Eye" on the front cover.
Quines: Poems in tribute to women of Scotland is a beautiful collection. I heard Gerda reading "The Abdication of Mary Queen of Scots" on Women's hour in March 2018. It made such an impression on me that it inspired me to paint "Lover's Eye" which featured in my 2018 show with Arusha Gallery, "Linger Awhile", an exhibiton inspired by the life of Mary Queen of Scots.
Quines is published by Luath Press.
